About CBCN

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) is the official assembly and unifying body of Catholic Bishops in Nigeria. It serves as an organ of unity, communion, and solidarity for over thirty million Catholics across the thirty-six states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of the nation.

The Conference provides a formal forum through which the collegial responsibility of Nigerian Bishops, as successors of the Apostles in communion with the Holy Father, is expressed. Through this shared responsibility, the CBCN bears witness to the vision of the Church as a family of God, fostering collaboration, mutual support, and shared pastoral mission among the Bishops.

Comprising Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and Heads of Ecclesiastical Jurisdictions, the CBCN brings together shepherds of souls who pray, study, deliberate, and work collectively for the good of the Church and society. United by a common faith and mission, the Conference enables the Bishops to speak with one voice on matters of faith, morals, social justice, and national concern.

Through its teaching, prophetic, and pastoral ministries, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria provides spiritual leadership, promotes the values of the Gospel, and guides the faithful in responding to the spiritual, moral, and social challenges of contemporary Nigerian society.

Plenary Sessions

Plenary Sessions of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria

The Plenary Session is the highest decision-making gathering of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN). It holds twice annually, usually in the first week of Lent and the second week of September, bringing together Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and Heads of Ecclesiastical Jurisdictions from across the country.

The Plenary Sessions are dedicated periods of prayer, study, reflection, and deliberation on issues central to the life and mission of the Church in Nigeria. During these sessions, the Bishops evaluate the pastoral realities of the nation and collectively discern responses to matters affecting the evangelizing mission of the Church, the pastoral care of the faithful, and the moral and spiritual wellbeing of society.

Key areas of focus include the promotion of human dignity and human rights, the pursuit of truth, justice, reconciliation, and peace, as well as the Church’s commitment to integral and wholesome human development. Resolutions and communiqués issued at the end of each Plenary Session often provide guidance not only to the Catholic faithful but also to public authorities and the wider Nigerian society on pressing national and social concerns.
