The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), through its Department of Mission and Dialogue, in collaboration with the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS), Missio Nigeria, joins Catholics worldwide in celebrating the Centenary of World Mission Sunday on Sunday, 18 October, 2026. World Mission Sunday marks 100 years since Pope Pius XI established this annual celebration in 1926 as a special day of prayer and financial support for the Church’s missionary activities. This historic milestone offers the Church an opportunity to renew her commitment to proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ and supporting missionary work, particularly in communities most in need.
The theme for this year’s celebration, “One in Christ, United in Mission,” chosen by His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV, highlights the essential connection between Christian unity and the Church’s evangelising mission. Inspired by the prayer of Jesus, “That they may all be one” (John 17:21), the theme reminds us that authentic missionary witness begins with unity, fraternity, reconciliation, and a shared commitment to the Gospel. In a world increasingly challenged by conflicts, polarisation, and declining mutual trust, this message is very relevant. For us in Nigeria, as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections, it is a timely reminder of the need to promote peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, constructive dialogue, and national unity. Christians are called to be credible witnesses of Christ by building bridges across differences, fostering reconciliation, and contributing to the common good.
On this special occasion, we call on every Catholic, parish, school, religious community, and Catholic organisation across the country to pray for the missions, give generously to support missionary activities, and actively participate in the Church’s mission of evangelisation. We urge parish priests and pastoral leaders to mobilise their communities for meaningful participation in World Mission Sunday; Catholic institutions to promote missionary awareness among students and staff; and all the faithful to support missionaries who bring the Gospel, education, healthcare, and hope to vulnerable and underserved communities.
Let this centenary be more than a commemoration; let it be a renewed commitment to mission. Let every parish become a centre of missionary prayer, every Catholic a witness to Christ’s love, and every act of generosity a sign of solidarity with those who proclaim the Gospel in difficult circumstances. Together, through prayer, giving, service, and reconciliation, we can strengthen the Church’s mission and bring the light of Christ to every community.
Through the intercession of Mary, Star of Evangelisation, may we remain one in Christ and united in mission, building a Church and a country where unity overcomes division and the Gospel inspires hope.
